Dr. Orozco Hernandez completed his training in Mexico and was board certified for Consejo Nacional Cirugia de Torax with the highest honors. He has been an active surgeon in all the areas of cardiovascular and lung disease, including adult heart surgery, congenital surgery, vascular and endovascular surgery, chest wall surgery and tracheal and lung surgery. He completed a fellowship at Arizona Heart Hospital in vascular and endovascular surgery and a fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago in mechanical circulatory support and heart transplant.
Zafar Nawaz, Ph.D. is the Senior Associate Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, a Tenured Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Associate Research Director of the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Nawaz is an internationally recognized scientist with over 20 years of experience investigating mechanisms of gene regulation by steroid hormone receptors. Early in his career, he served as a Fellow and later as an Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas. In 2002, Dr. Nawaz became the Cancer Center Molecular Biology Core Director at Creighton University, Nebraska, where he developed an interest in the area of translational research, specifically related to endocrine cancers. Dr. Nawaz moved to the University of Miami in 2004 and continues his research in the areas of endocrinology, neuro-degenerative diseases and cancer. Dr. Nawaz holds a Visiting Professor position at Behua University, China, and Foreign Professorships at the University of Punjab and Allama Iqbal Medical College, both in Lahore, Pakistan. Dr. Nawaz has received several awards and honors, and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed research articles in prestigious scientific journals, such as Molecular Cell and PNAS. He is a member of numerous professional societies and serves on the review boards for a number of professional journals and funding agencies.
